Career and Job Opportunities in Library & Information Science

Each an every one of us aspires to become something life. Everybody has a dream job in their mind for which one has work very hard as nothing comes easy in life and that to dreams. With the passing of time there are numbers of field cropping up where one can make a lucrative career. These fields were either unknown or avoided by people earlier, but now there is a change in the mindset of the people and they do not have any inhibition in making a career in fields which were not so popular. One such field is Library and Information science.

Now Library and Information Science is not a field which not every one of us is well accustomed to. Library science, which could also be termed as Library and Information Science, is a field which involves the use of knowledge utilized in various fields and organizational techniques, educational factors and matters which have bearing, direct or indirect, in the library.

For any person desiring to make a career in this field has get atleast a bachelor degree in Library Science otherwise he would not be able to work in this profession. One of the most deciding factors to stay long in this field is that one has to be creative and have to have new ideas especially on matters pertaining to Information science. For this one has to be aware of the nitty-gritty of the matters related to computers such as the development of web pages, folder management, encoding etc.

So it involves the integration of the computer related knowledge with matters related to library so as to make it an advanced knowledge based field and also very interactive and convenient. Apart from the above one must possess a good skill of communication, customer engagement, great management skills, good understanding for needs of the user etc.

Now one must have a query as to where this profession would land us if one chooses to study for it. Well a person who has completed the course of the Library Science either a bachelor or masters or M.Phil etc can land a job in a recognized government maintained libraries, organization of private nature, foreign embassies, organization where there is large generation and maintenance of information and handling of such information, colleges, universities , schools, having their own libraries, libraries maintained for law study or any other kind of a special library maintained by an institution etc.

Now it also has a definite structure and designation which one can and wants to achieve in his or her career. Some of the career options available in this field are Library Assistant, Librarian, Deputy Librarian, Consultant Librarian, Technical assistant, Head of Information Center, Information Analyst (Senior and Junior) etc. So we can see that there are host of opportunities available in this field and there is no dearth of work satisfaction with ample scope for promotion in an organization structure if one gets the right step.

Infact the salaries available to personnel in this field is at par when compared to other popular fields like accountancy, management, security, etc. but in this field salaries vary according the persons experience in the field, qualification one possesses, the institute one is studying, the placement which one acquires etc. Therefore has to keep these factors in mind.
